Mechanical vs electronic bike bells: why a real bell still makes a difference

Mechanical vs electronic bike bells: why a real bell still makes a difference

With electronic bike bells becoming available on GPS cycling computers, is a mechanical bike bell still necessary? At CloseTheGap, we have been developing our HideMyBell products for over 10 years. Although electronic bells are a useful new feature, a mechanical bell still offers several clear advantages.

1. A recognisable sound

One of the main advantages of a mechanical bike bell is its familiar sound. The clear PING! is immediately recognised by pedestrians and other road users as a cyclist approaching. Unlike electronic sounds played through a speaker, a mechanical bell produces its sound naturally through the vibration of metal.

2. Easy to Operate, even with gloves

A bike bell should be easy to use without taking your attention away from the road. The HideMyBell striker can be operated intuitively with one finger while keeping your hand on the handlebar. There is no need to use a touchscreen or search for a button on your GPS computer. Thanks to the strong spring in the striker mechanism, the bell is also easy to operate when wearing cycling gloves.

3. New Silver: clear and powerful sound

Our latest Raceday4 EVO series features a bell made from new silver, a specially selected metal alloy that produces a bright and clear ringing sound. Together with the improved striker mechanism and strong spring, this results in a surprisingly loud and distinctive PING! Despite its powerful sound, the bell remains compact and is neatly integrated underneath your GPS computer.

4. Always ready to use

A mechanical bell works independently of batteries, software or electronic connections. No charging or settings are required. Combined with its discreet position underneath the GPS computer, CloseTheGap offers a practical solution without adding extra accessories to your handlebar.

Over 10 years of product development

Since 2015, we have continuously improved the HideMyBell concept, focusing on sound quality, materials, ease of use and integration. Our latest Raceday4 EVO series combines a GPS computer mount, removable mechanical bell, light adapter and optional AirTag integration in one lightweight product. All designed and manufactured in the Netherlands.

The best of both worlds

Electronic bike bells are a welcome addition to modern cycling computers. However, the familiar sound, direct operation and reliability of a mechanical bell remain important advantages. With our mounts you combine modern GPS technology with a traditional mechanical bell, neatly integrated into your cockpit.
